So you just bought/received a new DSLR with the kit lens for Christmas, and you decide to take some pictures with it. To your disappointment, the picture quality isn't sharp and the background is dark/yellow and isn't quite as bright as you want it to be. So you decide should I buy a new lens or body?
Here are some reasons why you should buy a LENS instead of a new body. First off the reason why you're pictures aren't as bright and sharp as you want them to be is because the lens that came with the kit most likely has an aperture of f/3.5-5 ( Will go into detail later). Secondly the lenses retain their value longer than the body which will most likely be replaced in 8 months or less.
1. The reason why F/3.5-5 isn't a good aperture is because it's not letting much light in, which leads to the pictures being not sharp. A good aperture is F/2.8, because at F/2.8 the lens is letting in as much light as it can handle resulting in sharper pictures and beautiful background blur (bokeh). You may have wondered why the F/2.8 lenses are so expensive, now you know why because at F/2.8, magic is made.
2. Lenses retain their value more than bodies because, a body is replaced in usually 8-9 months. "Remember BODIES DO NOT TAKE PICTURES, LENSES DO". Imagine if you have a low end body with a F/2.8 lens. Your pictures are going to be sharp and the pictures will have beautiful bokeh. Now imagine you have this highend body but you still shoot with the kit lens. First off, for Nikons, High end cameras (FX Format) CANNOT use low end lenses(DX Format). But even if you manage to find a F/3.5-5 lens, not only is the picture going to be horrendous, but people are going to laugh at you because you have this expensive body but you're using a low end lens.
So to recap everything.... GET A LENS! You will not be disappointed, and regret that you should have gotten a lens instead of a body.
** This is for people who already have a body, It's not very productive to buy a lens with no body.......
